Consider this, more than a 1,000-year-old temple, built by Rajendra Chola-I in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, was pulled down by the state government in the name of renovation. Another example, in May 2010, the temple tower of the famous 500-year-old Kalahasti temple in Andhra Pradesh, built by King Krishnadevaraya of Vijayanagara, collapsed.
Government manages more than 100,000 temples in India but neither has capacity nor qualified experts to conserve leading to the “massacre” of hundreds of ancient temples that would be national treasures in other countries.
This sorry state of affairs is the direct result of over 100 thousand temples being managed by callous and corrupt state governments. Government must allow Hindus to manage their own temples like Christians, Sikh, Muslims, Parsis and other religions are allowed so they can protect and conserve their historic temples and culture.
